Pandemic Self-Portrait, oil on canvas, 11” x 14”, 2020.

2020 is a difficult year for the world. As an Asian America artist, this experience has been unspeakable. The mostly monochrome black and white treatment of the painting represents the state of the mind and the racial struggle during this challenging time. While the mask has become a symbol that conceals and reveals. The red lips represent the universal desire for beauty and the longing to be part of the normal world.

Jo, oil on canvas, 36" x 48", 2016.
Jo was a janitor in the art department when I was pursuing my doctorate degree at University of Louisville. I saw her daily in the morning mopping the hallway of the art building. In this painting, I intended to express the sense of dignity and pride that Jo had for her work. I painted her holding her mop as she is holding a staff. The decorative crown designs above Jo reiterate the concept of the painting.

Tom Resting in His Room, oil on canvas, 36" x 48", 2016.
Tom was a janitor working for the art department at University of Louisville.
I painted Tom sitting cross-legged on his orange sofa in his small room. He is holding a pair of work gloves and a scraper on each hand relaxing and proud.
